Snake, sun, country road
Saw a small snake writhing in the middle of a country road, half its body ground into the blacktop, the other half raised off the ground as if looking for a foot standing on its tail. It was but a quick glimpse, though long enough to see blood squirting with each twist, the black of the snake glistening in the sun like an eel freshly picked from water. And tonight I'm unable to take my mind off this snake and what was likely its dying moments. Writhing agony, the heat of the road and sun, absolutely immobilized.
